Main Modules

The 3rd  GRIAT Summer School  wants to address the fast-developing area of creating and running digital services. It offers a three-module course that combines IT and business development skills.

The course will consist of three main modules:

1. Overview of IT knowledge.

2. Artificial neural networks (ANN)

3. Entrepreneurship and start-ups.

Module 1 "Overview of IT knowledge":

The first part of the course is an introduction. The lecturers identify the starting position of each student in such areas as optimization, mathematical modeling, and programming. During the classes, the lecturers motivate and encourage students to refresh and/or dive into these subjects. They conduct introductory practical classes for working mathematical modeling and programming packages. Special attention will be paid to business students to help them review the programming skills needed for a successful completion of the program. Here teamwork with IT students will be helpful, including one-on-one tutoring and mentoring.

Module 2 "Artificial neural networks (ANN​​)":

The practical part of the training course will be devoted to the design and development of intelligent computing systems – artificial neural networks (ANN). ANNs are currently the most popular tool for solving crucial tasks in industry and business: from biometric identification to systems management in the field of (Internet of Things). Having studied the basics of ANN design, students will be able to identify and come up with new areas and spheres, in which ANN applications can be beneficial. This is a central element for creating a successful IT-startup.

The study of neural networks includes the following fields:
- Multilayer perceptrons
- Recursive neural networks
-
- Fuzzy neural networks
 

Practical and laboratory work units are implemented within each section. Students will independently develop ANNs in the software packages Deductor, MatLab, and Students will also create ANNs in Python program language.

During the study process, students will complete project assignments. They consist of the following steps:

1. To identify and come up with an innovative approach a problem that can be solved with the help of an artificial neural network

2. To select the best suited ANN type to solve the problem

3. To develop ANN to solve the problem with the help of the previously studied software systems.

Datasets will be provided by the teacher.

Module 3 "Entrepreneurship and start-ups".

The third module on entrepreneurship and business hypothesis testing will take place throughout the entire summer school. It aims to start from simple ideas and their development to practical implementation, using the students’ ANN projects. At the end of the program, each student team has the opportunity to present their project to experts from the field and receive valuable feedback on the feasibility and potential as a start-up.

Students’ requirements

B. Sc. and  M. Sc. students of technical, engineering and economic specialties. Preference will be given to students of IT specialties (programmers, system administrators, IT analysts, etc.), as well as students applied areas of mathematics (system analysts specialists in modeling of technical processes, etc.)

List of planned lectures and short description (remark: these hours (column L) can be divided into lectures and practical cases:

The Summer School pays attention to local languages and cultures (Russian and Tatar) by offering a Russian class for German students of 90 min/day. It also includes a variety of activities to explore Kazan, i.e., a city tour and a picnic on the Volga river banks. With a major Tatar holiday – Kurban Bajram – in the middle of the program schedule, students will have a chance to witness how Muslims respect traditional customs and celebrate this religious feast together with Russian Orthodox Christians.

Kazan Kremlin

For more than a thousand years of its history, the white-stone, symbolic and legendary Kazan Kremlin has heard almost every language of the world and hosted common tourists, ministers and presidents alike. Imperious-looking and powerful, it calls Muslims to the prayer in mosques and at the same time lets Orthodox church bells ring loud. By becoming a home to numerous museums, it invites guests from all over the planet every day. This architectural and historic monument was rightly included in UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List as early as in 2000.

Innopolis

Innopolis (Russian: Иннополис) is a town in Verkhneuslonsky District of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, a satellite of Kazan, the capital of the republic. This is the smallest town in Russia with 96 inhabitants according to the 2016 estimate. The basis of the housing stock of Innopolis is 4 blocks of multi-storey apartment houses - 16 houses for 840 apartments - built by the State Housing Fund under the President of the Republic of Tatarstan and intended for leasing to residents of Innopolis and students. As of the end of 2016, there was a kindergarten, a school, an IT lyceum, a sports and medical center, post offices, client offices of AK Bars and Sberbank, a beauty salon, a coffee shop and a supermarket in Innopolis.

Island town of Sviyazhsk

The island town of Sziyazhsk is that same fairy-tale island of Buyan, that magical land which Pushkin wrote about in his story of Prince Gvidon. Everything on the island simply breathes history. People come here to enjoy the truly mythical atmosphere, learn more about the history and admire the local architecture.

The Mari El Republic

​Mari El is notable for being one of the last strongholds of organized paganism in Europe. While many of the Mari people have converted to Russian Orthodoxy, a sizable number practice the Marla Faith, which combines Christianity with significant native shamanistic traditions. The Russian and Soviet governments have been suspicious of Finno-Ugric nationalism within Mari El (and Udmurtia), however, and have discouraged the Marla Faith; accordingly, it may be difficult to have any experiences with the Marla Faith while visiting the region. But if you do, you may be lucky enough to experience some of the Mari People's millenia old traditions, like their marriage ceremonies in sacred forest groves.
