KAI Dynasty: Yulia Tunakova

06.02.2024

We continue to acquaint you with the prominent figures of our university on the eve of the Day of Russian Science

Yulia Tunakova is one of the brightest representatives of the university’s teaching dynasties. Her grandfather Pavel Tunakov, the former Minister of Public Utilities of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, was directly involved in developing and construction of Kazan. More than that, he managed to conduct research activities, being a consultant at the Department of Automobiles and Automobile Engines of KAI.

Her parents - Aleksey Tunakov and Irina Oranskaya - were also related to the Kazan Aviation Institute. Next year Yulia Tunakova herself will celebrate her thirtieth anniversary since she has entered the university, and eventually it has become a significant part of her life and a platform for professional and scientific growth. In 1995, she graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry of Kazan State University, and came to work as an assistant at the Department of General Chemistry and Physics of KAI, and over time became the head of this department.

Today Yulia Tunakova is a Doctor of Chemical Sciences, professor, head of the Department of General Chemistry and Ecology, Honored Ecologist of the Republic of Tatarstan, author of more than 400 scientific papers and 24 patents. Her research interests include chemical analysis, control sensors, ecological monitoring of environmental objects and means of ensuring the environmental safety of the territory and population.

The head of the Department of General Chemistry and Ecology attributes her success to her teachers:

“One of the examples of the most inspirational woman in science for me is Vera Toropova, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Honored Professor of Kazan State University, Professor of the Department of Analytical Chemistry. She was “the last of the Mohicans”. After her death in 2008, we lost a generation of USSR analysts and, first of all, polarographers, who were responsible for the creation and development of this method of analysis.

Even in her old day, Vera Toropova was in great demand among postgraduate students, doctor’s degree candidates and others, who needed very qualified advice in different fields of science.”

Moreover, Yulia Tunakova acknowledges her current team of KAI academic staff:

“The most interesting scientific projects have been implemented and are now being developed in collaboration with Novikova Svetlana, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics of KNRTU-KAI. She is involved in developing a chemometric research approach - at the intersection of mathematics, innovative information technologies and analytical chemistry. No doubt, with the participation of specialists from various fields of knowledge, science-intensive results can be obtained!
