Kazan State Technical University
(KSTU) was established in 1932. The history of the University is
closely related to the progress of Russian aeronautics. Fundamental
education and profound scientific research are the distinguishing
features of the university, which make it very attractive for a
great number of young people. Until the recent time, it was well
known as Kazan Aviation Institute (KAI). In 1973, the Institute was
named after Andrey N.Tupolev, the prominent aircraft designer. In
1992, it obtained the status of the State Technical University. The
University was most recently accredited by the Ministry of Education
of the Russian Federation in 2008.
The University is situated
in the centre of Kazan city. Kazan (population = 1.2 mln.) is the
capital of the Republic of Tatarstan (population = 3.8 mln., area =
68,700 sq. km). Kazan is a large industrial, cultural and education
center of Russian Federation, situated on the Volga river, 800 km
East from Moscow. There are 64 universities and higher education
institutions and about 170,000 students in Kazan. There are 5 state
theaters, including Opera and Ballet, Tatar and Russian Drama,
Conservatory, etc.

Today the University is one of
the leading Russian institutions in aircraft engineering, engine-
and instrument- design and manufacturing, computer science and
radio- and telecommunications engineering. KSTU is the largest
technical university in the Republic of Tatarstan and the Volga
region.

Department, an Advaced Training Department, a Continued Education
Center, a Regional Center of New Information Technologies, a
Scientific Library, Post-graduate and Doctoral Candidate's Schools
training for Ph.D. and D.Sc. degree.

The University has
a Scientific-Research Institute for Diagnosis and Control of
Physical & Chemical Processes, Joint Scientific-Research
Institute of Experimental Aesthetics, Scientific-Research Centre of
Industrial Electrodynamics, Scientific-Research Centre of Dynamics
and Strength, and Regional Innovating Scientific
Centre.
Kazan State Technical University teaches about 25000
students on 65 majors in Engineering, Business and Humanitarian
Sciences. The teaching and research staff of the University counts
3000 personnel, including 150 Full Profs. & D.Sc. degree
holders, 600 Associate Profs. & Ph.D. degree holders.
The
University is housed in 7 perfectly equipped buildings. It has 6
student's dormitories, and a hotel. The sport complex includes 5
well-equipped indoor sports halls, as well as outdoor facilities for
skiing & water sports. The University also has a sports camp in
a picturesque place on the Volga river, 40 km away from
Kazan.
KSTU’s new campus is now under construction. Its first
academic building was opened for students in 2004; the second
building is now under construction. The construction of the campus
is to be completed within a few years.
KSTU includes 11
associated branch institutes outside Kazan in the towns of
Almetevsk, Bugulma, Chistopol, Elabuga, Leninogorsk, Naberezhnye
Chelny, Nizhnekamsk, Volzhsk, Vyatskie Polyany, Zainsk,
Zelenodolsk.
In 2008, KSTU won an all-Russian competition
among all Russian universities and institutes with the innovative
academic programme entitled "System for Training of the World Level
Experts in the Field of Development and Use of Information
Technologies as a Key Factor to Provide a Competitiveness in
Machinery Production". Both Governments of the Russian Federation
and the Republic of Tatarstan awarded the University the «Excellence
and Innovation Label» and assigned a grant of $20 mln.(equiv.) in
order to implement the KSTU's innovative programme.
In 2009,
KSTU became 1 of the 12 universities selected among all the Russian
universities (from about 900 state HE institutions and 2000 private
ones) to be awarded the prestigious title of the “National Research
University” and $70 mln. (equiv.) grant from both Governments of
Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan.
International
Cooperation
Kazan State Technical University
has a rich experience in training of foreign students. At the very
foundation of KSTU 50 students from Albania, Bulgaria, China,
Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Korea, Poland and Romania
applied their documents to KSTU and successfully graduated. Nowadays
they are eminent entrepreneurs of industry, teachers and scientists
in their home countries.
As a participant of international programs like
TEMPUS, ERASMUS-MUNDUS, DAAD, British Council, European
Universities' Association, European Association of Aerospace
Universities PEGASUS, Salzburg Seminar, IREX, Fulbright and many
others, the University regularly sends students, teachers and
researchers for training and probation to various countries of the
world.
During the last years, students, postgraduates,
teachers and scientists of the Technical University have visited
universities, research and linguistic centres in USA, UK, Germany,
France and other countries.
